10-13-08 same tatted snowflake

Ok, snowflake #3. I think I am making the middle picot too big. I was having trouble seeing it after awhile so I tied a pink/red thread around it to keep better track of it. I think the only thing wrong with this one is that I am making all of the picots too big. I'm hoping to get some of the picot gauges from Georgia Seitz soon, hopefully that will help me.

Picot consistency is always a problem, even if you have been tatting for a long time. Some people can "eyeball" them and some of us need help from time to time. Georgia's gauges will help you a lot. In the meantime, cut a piece of tape the width of the picot and put it on your index finger. You can use that as a guide for your picots. It really does work! If I can ever help you, please let me know.

Oh cool! I would never have thought of that. I usually put my thumb down to hold the space, how do you do it with your index finger? This might explain a lot of the problems I've encountered! lol!

It was actually my friend Elizabeth who taught me this only she uses seamstress tape that has measurements on it. I use it now too. But, if you are getting some of Georgia's gauges, they will do better. I'll try to explain better. I wish I had a video camera. I put the tape on my index finger. Then, I make the first half of the ds, pinch the start of the picot at the first edge of the tape with my thumb and then pull out the picot to the other end of the tape. Then, tat the second half of the ds and close the picot. Does that make sense? I'm still using my thumb to conrol it, just using the tape on the index finger to size the picot. Let me know!

Hi Sy! It's great to see the progess you've made. I admire greatly that you have been able to learn tatting online. That is not an easy thing to do and it is something to be proud of.
